Discover the Benefits of Yoga

For many, yoga provides a welcoming escape from the hustle of everyday life. Known as a symbol of serenity and well-being, the practice of yoga also offers a wide range of physical and mental health benefits.

Among others, yoga is known to:
  • Increase Muscle Strength and Flexibility – Asanas, or yoga poses, use every muscle in the body. Practicing yoga at least twice a week increases shoulder, back and hamstring flexibility. Over time, the ligaments, tendons, and muscles lengthen, and the more you practice, the more strength and flexibility you build.

  • Increase Mindfulness – Yoga connects us with the present, not just during class, but in physical and emotional areas of our personal lives and surroundings. With a heightened, nonjudgmental sense of awareness, mindfulness cultivates inner peace, increases self-esteem, improves concentration, and fosters a healthy relationship with food and eating.

  • Reduce Anxiety and Lower Stress Levels – The practice and mediation of yoga has been demonstrated to reduce cortisol (a hormone often used to measure a body’s response to stress) and heighten brain chemicals that combat stress, depression, and anxiety-related disorders.

  • Overall Fitness - By practicing regularly, yoga increases endurance, improves blood circulation and lung function, enhances digestion, and helps eliminate toxins more efficiently. Even gentle yoga practice can provide excellent cardiovascular benefits.

Tips for Improving Your Yoga Practice
  1. Hydrate All Day - Focus on hydrating throughout the day. Pre-hydrate, re-hydrate, and eat foods with high water content, such as watermelon, lettuce, and soups. Try not to drink too much immediately before class (or you’ll end up feeling bloated).

  1. Arrive Early - Allow yourself an additional 10 to 15 minutes to prepare for class. Arriving in a mad rush will leave you feeling flustered upon arrival, so take the extra time to slow down for a more thoughtful entry to the practice.

  1. Connect with Yourself - Before class begins, take a few moments to turn inward, breathe, and set intention. Close your eyes and focus on something that helps you feel peaceful.

  1. Savor Shavasana - Done at the end of yoga practice, Shavasana rejuvenates the mind, body, and spirit. It may seem like you’re taking a nap but try to keep your mind focused. After class has ended, allow yourself time to transition to a faster pace. Don’t rush to your phone the second class has ended.

  1. Dedicate A Few Moments Each Day to Home Practice- Choose the time that works best for you. Practice your breathing and meditation. Yoga is a way of life. Embrace it.
Namaste.
